I fully agree with what you have said here!

I find it easier to work with a point and shoot camera.

Carrying SLR cams can be security risks and amateurs go for fancy cam bags which put them in the radar of thieves.

I still have a long way to go before I start investing $$$ in a good camera :-).

Well - fact is that the MAS fleet is a lot older than SIA's. I don't find that difference too far fetched really. You'll notice the depreciation of SIA is much higher than MAS. That is probably writing of the value of their new planes.

I disagree with some of your comments though. Like the aircraft rental part.

By looking at the depreciation, one would know that:

1) MAS has little fixed assets (planes) or the planes are too old thus have been fully depreciated (which could explain why the high repair and maintenance)
2) MAS has little fixed assets (planes) so they are renting/leasing it.

And the separate disclosure of computer booking expenses shouldn't be made an issue as it is the director's prerogative to disclose it that way. And needless to say, companies in Malaysia expects the auditors to draft their accounts for them so this could probably be what the auditors think should be disclosed separately. Its kind of judgemental.

However I do agree that repair and maintenance is a bit on the high side. If the management is spending so much annually to service their fixed assets probably they should consider disposing them off and acquiring new planes?

MAS does own some of the planes in the fleet but not all of them. As for the arguments that the planes are old and need more maintenance, that statement holds water.

All aircrafts are subjected to routine maintenance. Some are light checks requiring aircraft downtime of perhaps a day, while some check are heavier and require a longer downtime, some as long as a month. Aircrafts, like cars, when new, will require only the light checks. Once the aircraft reach a certain age, the heavy checks come in. How often the checks are done is based on time and usage.

Most of the aircraft in the SIA fleet are very young, and SIA does dispose of them before the heavy check are due. Hence their maintenance cost is lower.

For example, in a heavy check, the aircraft can be in the hangar for a month. During this month, the aircraft is basically stripped down to the bones and rebuild. Some parts are replaced, some are refurbished. The aircraft itself may have its paint stripped and the entire aircraft painted again. Lets not start on things like engine change. All these are cost.

Lets not forget the staff cost as well. If you run a hangar to only do light check, like changing filter and oil, you will not need a large number of staff/ However if you have to run a hangar that caters to all types of check, you will need more manpower. BTW the minimum number of men you can have is regulated by the authorities like the JAA or FAA. Additional cost.

I am no way defending MAS or SIA, just telling it as it is.

If I'm not mistaken, reason why the rental is high is because MAS dont own the planes. Was taken off their hands by PMB, a GLC company form to take over the entire fleet back at 2002.

As for the company running a loss, it was coming, last financial report was saved by the late payment fees from the delayed A380 order. Else, they would have been slightly in the red.

I missed those days as well. To me, Mr Kow was more like a father. I learnt a lot of management kind of things from him. Many years passed by, I picked up extra managerial skills along the way but the most inspirational ones still from him. Now I realise, what is missing from others is the "Kow's" style. He is such a huge GURU to me.

You, of course, is like a big brother to me, especially u bullied me in some 'ways'. hehehe.
